The authors are grateful for the support of the International Centre for the Study of East Asian Development (ICSEAD) in Kitakyushu, Japan. ICSEAD also provided an opportunity for Christopher Findlay to visit the Centre in February 2001 and discuss work to date on the project.

The work included extensive fieldwork in Japan in February 2001 and the authors are grateful for the interest and support of all those people interviewed. Part of the work was completed while Christopher Findlay was a Visiting Professor in the Research Institute for Economics and Business Administration at Kobe University. He is grateful to the Institute for their wide-ranging support during his visit. Research assistance on accessing the trade data was provided by Marpudin Azis from the Australia-Japan Research Centre at the Australian National University.
