Topic

Toward the revitalization of agriculture and food industries in Japan and Kyushu

Abstract

Japanese agriculture is under the pressure to cope with internationalization amid economic globalization such as FTAs and EPAs. On the other hand, public concerns in food security in emergencies, such as the Ukrainian crisis, are growing.
Japan’s agricultural problems can be summarized into three issues: farmland, rice, and agricultural cooperatives. In this presentation, I will show the current conditions and the core issues of Japanese agriculture, focusing on the three, and discuss the performance of agricultural policy in the past. In addition, I will evaluate the past agricultural reforms, including the reform of agricultural cooperatives under the Abe administration, and examine the pros and cons of the new policy, “Strategy for Sustainable Food Systems, MeaDRI”, which focuses on the expansion of organic farming.
Today’s agriculture needs to be integrated into the food system and deepen its ties with the final consumers, rather than just being an industry that provides raw materials. From such a point of view, I will present the direction that Japan and Kyushu’s agriculture should aim to in order for the further development.
