“Complementarity in Couples’ Retirement: The Effect of Mandatory Retirement Age Extension”
We study the interdependency in couples’ retirement decisions using the mandatory retirement age extension in Japan. Existing studies exploit policy variations in pension eligibility ages. However, delayed delivery of scheduled pensions has a direct impact on their household income. Therefore, the absence of the scheduled income transfer contaminates the interdependency in the couples’ retirement decisions.
In 2006, the Japanese government raised the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 63. The policy affects only the elderly who were born in 1946 or later, and two male cohorts born in 1945 and 1946 were under the same pension eligibility status. Therefore, we may evaluate the impact of the three-years extension in mandatory retirement age holding the pension system unchanged. Using regression and instrumental variable analysis, we find that the husbands’ retirement age extension and their deferred retirement increased their wives’ probability of working, supporting the importance of complementarity in couples’ retirement decisions in consideration of policy designs and structural estimations.
