Title

“Expansion of exports of Kyushu’s agricultural, forestry and fishery products taking advantage of Kitakyushu Airport”

Abstract

This report explores the possibility of expanding exports of agricultural products including forestry, fishery products and foods, which is necessary to revitalize agriculture in Kyushu and Japan. It examines in particular how to take advantage of Kitakyushu Airport for increases in exports of agricultural products by air cargo from Kyushu to Asian regions.

Exports of agricultural products were promoted under Abe’s administration and various kinds of policies were implemented. After introducing development of those policies in the past and now, it is focused the reality of agricultural exports by air cargo from Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Yamato Transport Co., Ltd. partnered with Japan Airlines is supposed to operate cargo planes from April 2024, and Kitakyushu Airport was selected as Kyushu’s only freighter airport. In addition to connecting Tokyo metropolitan area and Kyushu, Kitakyushu Airport is expected in the future to connect with other areas in Japan through airway networks and to function as a gateway to Asia for exporting agricultural products. The conditions for the business and the issues to be resolved are also discussed.
