Title

“From hospitality to hostility: Impact of the Rohingya refugee influx on the sentiments of host communities”

Abstract

We examine the impact of the 2017 Rohingya refugee influx on the sentiments of the host communities in Bangladesh, focusing on hostility towards refugees. Using an incentivized joy-of-destruction game on 1,679 individuals, we found that 57% of hosts paid to reduce the donation to support the Rohingya at a personal cost, indicating revealed hostility toward the refugee. Our regression analysis shows that hosts exposed to the influx reduced donations significantly more than those less exposed, likely due to the damage caused by the influx. However, both exposed and less-exposed hosts expressed similar negative opinions toward the refugees. This contrast indicates that the experiment effectively elicited real hostility towards the refugee outgroup rather than cosmetic expressions of hostility.

Presenter Biography

Dr. Higuchi acquired a B.A. in Sociology from Kyoto University in 2009. He completed the Policy Analysis Program (PA) and acquired a Ph.D. in Development Economics from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in 2014. He worked at Nagoya City University as a lecturer until 2015 and as an Assistant Professor until 2018. He has been an Associate Professor of Department of Economics at Sophia University since 2020.
