Digital economy and rural revitalization: Evidence from China based on county-level panel data
（デジタル経済と農村振興―中国の県レベルパネルデータに基づく実証研究）
Abstract
Digital economy is a new driving force for China’s economic development and the strategy of rural revitalization is the overall focus of the work of the “three rural issues” in the new era. By 2020, China has achieved eradication of absolute poverty and entered the stage of rural revitalization. Therefore, it is important to examine the impact of digital economy on rural revitalization. This study examines the driving effect, mechanism and heterogeneity of digital economy on rural revitalization based on the measured digital economy development score, several digital economy indicators, and rural revitalization score by using the county-level panel data in Zhejiang during the period of 2010–2021. This study shows that the digital economy measured by rural e-commerce, digitization level, digital finance indexes, and the number of households using broadband Internet has a significant driving effect on rural revitalization, and this conclusion still holds after considering the endogeneity problem and a series of robustness tests. Moreover, this study finds that technological innovation measured by number of inventions patent applications approved and transformation of industrial structure are important mechanisms of the digital economy driving rural revitalization.
(Japanese Translation) デジタル経済は中国経済発展の新たな原動力であり、農村振興戦略は新時代の「三農問題」の全体的な焦点である。2020年までに、中国は絶対的貧困の撲滅を達成し、農村振興の段階に入った。したがって、デジタル経済が農村振興に与える影響を検証することには意義がある。そこで、本研究では、2010年から2021年までの浙江省の県レベルのパネルデータを用いて、デジタル経済発展スコア、いくつかのデジタル経済指標、農村振興スコアに基づいて、デジタル経済が農村振興に及ぼす推進効果、そのメカニズム、そして、その異質性を検証する。本研究は、農村電子商取引、デジタル化水準、デジタル金融包摂指標、ブロードバンドインターネット利用世帯数によって測定されるデジタル経済が農村振興に有意な促進効果を持つことを示し、この結論は内生性問題や一連の頑健性テストを考慮してもなお維持される。さらに本研究は、発明の特許出願承認数で測定される技術革新と産業構造の転換が、デジタル経済が農村振興を促進する重要なメカニズムであることを明らかにした。
