Theme: Space Time Dynamics of Pollution and Income in China

Abstract: Using a novel data set, we study the relationship between income and air pollution for 285 Chinese cities from a spatial distribution point of view. In particular, we detect clusters for both variables for the years 2000-2018, and show their spatial dependence at the city level. We then proceed to analyze the co-evolution of these throughout the whole period as well as before and after the year 2013. We find that spatial dependence changes throughout these periods, remaining very high and statistically significant. Finally, a dynamic cluster approach shows that polarization between east and west cities occurs for the years under study, with some changes occurring when considering the post-2013 period.
