Contents Introduction

This short note demonstrates that mortality rates among early European settlers in colonies can work as an instrument for institutional quality only when entered in log form. It fails to succeed as an instrument if instead is entered in level form. This calls into question the theory regarding the relationship between settler mortality rate and institutional quality that underpins the use of the former as instrument for the latter.
